What this practice area supports

Person-centred and relationship-based practice is what distinguishes truly effective social work from task-completion. When practitioners build genuine relationships, apply strengths-based thinking and keep the whole person — their history, values, relationships and aspirations — at the centre of every conversation, outcomes improve. But maintaining that relational quality under the pressure of high caseloads, complex need and organisational demand requires ongoing CPD and critical reflection.

The DCC-i Person-Centred & Relationship Based Practice pillar brings together interactive CPD tools, reflective practice resources and skills development materials designed to help social workers and social care practitioners deepen their relational practice. Every resource is co-designed with practitioners and people with lived experience, grounded in evidence-based models and aligned to BASW professional standards.

What this pillar covers

  • Strengths-based approaches and asset-based thinking in assessment and support
  • Relationship-based social work: theory, values and application
  • Person-centred care planning and supported decision-making
  • Professional identity, values and ethical practice
  • Active listening, communication and working with ambivalence
  • Supervision as a reflective learning space
  • Skills and intervention approaches for adult social care

Who this CPD is for

These resources are designed for social workers at all career stages — from ASYE practitioners developing their foundational practice to experienced practitioners and practice educators who want to deepen and reinvigorate their relational work. Resources are also relevant for social care support workers, team managers and commissioners committed to embedding person-centred approaches across their services.

CPD that connects to real practice

DCC-i person-centred practice CPD is built around realistic case scenarios, reflective tools and group discussion frameworks that translate directly into day-to-day work. Practitioners leave sessions with tools they can use immediately — in supervision, in team development and in their own individual practice. All programmes are BASW-approved and used by local authorities and NHS trusts across the UK.
