AGNI Practice Triangle Guide

Rank case examples on the deprivation of liberty scale, then work through the three AGNI triangle areas to support consistent practitioner reasoning.

How to use this activity

Complete the task as a practitioner benchmarking exercise

This activity works best as a group task. First, rank the cases individually or in pairs. Then use the prompt questions to test your reasoning before moving into the three AGNI triangle work-throughs.

  1. Rank each case on the DoL scale. Record the main reason for the placement so differences in practitioner judgement are visible.
  2. Use the prompt questions. Open the prompts for any scenario where the group is unsure, divided, or relying on assumptions.
  3. Choose one scenario for each triangle area. Work through actual arrangements, impact on the person, and safeguard route or escalation.
  4. Agree a benchmark. Capture the practical evidence, next action, and consistency note that the practitioner group will use in future cases.
Group benchmark Do not aim for identical answers too early. Aim for clear reasons, shared evidence, and consistent escalation thresholds.

1. Rank

Place each case on a five-point scale from low restriction to urgent safeguard concern.

2. Prompt

Use the pop-up questions to test whether your placement is evidence-led.

3. Work through

Choose a scenario for each AGNI area and record your practical reasoning.

Case ranking activity

Locate each scenario on the DoL scale

For each case, select the scale position, open the prompt questions if needed, and record the main reason for your judgement. The aim is to make differences in practitioner thresholds visible for discussion.

1 Low restriction 2 Monitor and review 3 Possible DoL 4 Clear DoL likely 5 Urgent safeguards

AGNI triangle practice

Choose a scenario for each triangle area

Use the same case bank, or deliberately choose different cases, to practise how the three areas change the analysis. Each work-through asks for evidence, a practical next step, and a benchmark decision.
